Best Terrier Breeds For Families

Fun-loving, playful, and energetic are all words that perfectly describe Terriers. While they initially started as farming dogs, Terriers have become great companions for large and small families in cities and the countryside.

If you’re looking to find out which Terrier breeds would make a great companion to your little ones, we’re here to help. To make the decision process a bit easier, we’ve taken the liberty of compiling a list of the best terrier breeds for families.

Boston Terrier

Much like their name suggests, these playful and fun-loving dogs originated in the late 1800s when Terriers and White English bulldogs were crossbred.  Due to their high energy levels and active nature, they make a perfect addition to any family. These dogs may be on the smaller side, but they love to make their presence known.

They have an excellent reputation for getting along with other dogs and are great with children. Your family can look forward to many days in the backyard throwing the ball around with your future Boston terrier.

West Highland White Terrier

These small, white terriers are energetic and always ready to play. Originally hailing from Scotland, these dogs were used for hunting and keeping pests away. While they’ve moved away from this purpose, these dogs do best with lots of exercise and affection. Sweet and playful, west highland white terriers can keep your little ones occupied for hours and vice versa.

Bull Terrier

Known for their unique, egg-shaped head, Bull Terriers make a great addition to any family. These dogs originally came about by crossing Bulldogs with Terriers to create agile dogs used for bull-baiting. Thankfully, they’re no longer used for any violent purposes and have turned into active family dogs with a great temperament. They get along easily with other dogs in the home and are very patient with curious young ones.

Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire terrier is one of the most miniature terriers in the family, but don’t let its appearance fool you. What they lack in size, they make up for immensely in personality. The silky soft coats that barely shed make them great cuddle buddies on cold winter nights, and they love attention.

Keep in mind that while the Yorkshire terrier is a family dog, they do well in families with older children. Their small size makes it easy for them to be injured by small children who may be too rough at times.
