Get Ready for National Pet Day! – April 11th

Get Ready For National Pet Day! – April 11th
It's almost National Pet Day, and here at Pet Ponderosa, we are gearing up to celebrate. In the coming days, we'll help you prep your plans for National Pet Day, whether it's pet adoption, a new toy, or a day in the park!

It is time to gear (or leash) up for 2019’s National Pet Day on Thursday, April 11! Pet lovers across the nation are preparing to make National Pet Day count.

As lifelong pet fanatics here at Pet Ponderosa, it is one of our favorite days of the year. That is why we’re here with a multi-blog guide on how to get the most out of (and put the most into) this year’s National Pet Day.

Ways to Celebrate National Pet Day

There are so many excellent ways to show love and support for the animals that always seem to be a source of love and support for us. Throughout our Prep for National Pet Day blog series, we’ll be sharing ideas on how to go the extra mile to celebrate our furry friends. Let’s start with pet adoption.

Adopt a Pet from a Local ‘No-Kill’ Pet Shelter

According to estimates by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, “Approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.” Sadly, “Approximately 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year (1.6 million dogs and 1.6 million cats),” meaning that less than half the animals that enter animal shelters are adopted.

Saddest of all, “Each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized (670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats).” Oftentimes, this euthanizing is done merely because of overcrowding and lack of adoption.

These stats are truly heartbreaking to think about. There is absolutely no excuse for pets being put to sleep simply because they are unwanted!

That is why one of the biggest and best ways to celebrate National Pet Day is to adopt a precious pet from a local shelter, like Sunny Sky’s Animal Rescue & Hospital in Puyallup.

Founded by passionate veterinarian Dr. Illina Berton, Sunny Sky’s Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization. Sunny Sky saves over 800 pets a year and is Washington’s largest ‘no-kill’ shelter. Many of the pets have special needs and are rescued out of awful situations. Since their opening, over 5,000 pets have been adopted!

Sunny Sky has many beautiful rescue pets up for adoption. There is a German Shepherd puppy named Diana as well as her sister Fergie and mom Gretchen. Then there is Roxy, a pit bull terrier who had a rough start at life but has kept her sweet, life loving personality. Molly, a sweet tabby cat whose owner recently had to move to an assistant living home and was not able to keep her is also looking for her forever home. The rescue cat, Glitters with gorgeous eyes and a hyperthyroid disorder needs a new family too..

Could you open your home? Could you help give these pets a better life? Why not make your family their family? Visit the Sunny Sky shelter to find and fall in love with your new furry companion!

Support a Local Pet Shelter

Many families are not currently in the position to adopt a pet. Perhaps your home is full or you live in a ‘no pets’ rental, or maybe you have other circumstances that don’t allow for pet adoption at this time. That is okay. You can support local pet shelters in other ways!

Why not spend April 11th (or another day!) volunteering at a local ‘no-kill’ pet shelter. You may just fall in love with it and make it a regular part of your schedule.

Don’t have time or ability to work in a volunteer day? That’s okay too! Why not donate funds or supplies to local animal rescue shelters. Sunny Sky’s Animal Rescue and Hospital often saves the lives of pets with severe medical issues that sometimes cost up to $5000, just for one animal. For a non-profit organization, that’s a pretty hefty bill. Any dollar counts and could help save an animal’s life.
